The start of HEROES NEED HEROES: Michael Fawcett: Founder and President of Heroes Need Heroes Inc. Michael is a Paramedic who has worked in two state services within Australia. He holds a Bachelor of Health Science that he completed in 2007 at the Queensland University of Technology. Through Michael’s passion and international travels, he witnessed and assisted Thailand’s heroes attempting to save a young life during what we would call in Australia, a horrible tragedy. A young girl had been hit by a car while riding a scooter and sustained head injuries. Michael and the ambulance staff from the Pitakkarn Foundation in Kanchanaburi, implemented patient care and transport to the Public Hospital, where they continued to assist working on the patient with medical staff. Unfortunately the patient later died from injuries that were incompatible with life. This experience exposed Michael to the dedicated staff and volunteers of Thailand’s ambulance and rescue services. It also exposed the need for help… These front line ‘heroes’ needed heroes themselves.
Michael came back to Australia determined to start recycling rescue equipment that would otherwise be destroyed in Australia once it was decommissioned. Equipment that could still be utilised to save lives. Michael’s involvement with student paramedic education while working at the University of Tasmania, has also prompted him to form a connection and potential student exchange between Australia and Thailand. This opportunity for both students would expose both Australia’s and Thailand’s student paramedics to environments they would otherwise not witness or be involved in. An opportunity that many, including Michael, see is invaluable to any student paramedic that would be fortunate enough to experience life and work in a new and somewhat challenging setting.
Michael has since formed Heroes Need Heroes Incorporated, with an executive of friends and colleagues from around Australia. Heroes Need Heroes has been registered with the Australian Charities and Not for Profits Commission and is gaining great support from the Ambulance and Rescue community within Australia.
